What is True Legend?

True Legend is a film that tells the story of Su Qi-Er, a wealthy man living during the Qing Dynasty who loses his fortune and reputation as a result of a conspiracy against him. After being forced out onto the streets, Su dedicates his life to martial arts and reemerges as a patriotic hero known as the "King of Beggars". The film is loosely based on the life of Beggar Su, a legendary figure in Chinese folklore and martial arts.

Synopsis

The film begins with Su Qi-Er (Vincent Zhao), a general who rescues the Qing prince from rebels with his foster brother Yuan Lie (Andy On). Su is rewarded by the prince with wealth and land, while Yuan is jealous of Su's success. Yuan secretly plots to kill Su and his family with the help of his father's former enemy Jia (Guo Xiaodong), who has mastered a deadly technique called Five Venom Fists.

Yuan attacks Su's mansion and kills Su's father (Leung Kar-Yan) and wife Ying (Zhou Xun). Su manages to escape with his son Feng (Liu Geng-Hong) and his maid Sister Yu (Michelle Yeoh), but he is severely injured by Yuan's Five Venom Fists. Su is rescued by Doctor Yu (Jay Chou), who heals him with herbal medicine. Su decides to abandon his worldly life and pursue martial arts mastery.

Su travels to Mount Wudang, where he meets an old sage (Gordon Liu) who teaches him the Wudang Fist technique. Su also encounters an old beggar (Jacky Heung) who claims to be the God of Wushu, who challenges him to a fight. Su defeats the beggar and learns the Drunken Fist technique from him. Su then returns to his home, where he reunites with his son and Sister Yu.

Meanwhile, Yuan has become a powerful warlord who terrorizes the people with his Five Venom Army. He also kidnaps Ying, who is revealed to be alive but brainwashed by Jia. Su confronts Yuan and Jia in a final showdown, where he uses his Wudang Fist and Drunken Fist to defeat them. Su then frees Ying from Jia's control and restores peace to the land.

The film ends with Su becoming the leader of a group of beggars who help the poor and the oppressed. He is hailed as the "King of Beggars" and a true legend of martial arts.
